Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security, African Union Commission

Ambassador Salah S. Hammad currently serves as the Head of the African Governance Platform Secretariat and the Head of the Human Rights and Transitional Justice Unit within the Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security of the African Union Commission. He holds a Master of Laws (LLM) in Human Rights and a Doctorate in International Relations, with a specialization in Human Rights.

Amb. Hammad studied Law and Political Science in the United States of America. He was recently appointed as an Ambassador within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Sudan. In 2013, he was also recognized as the Ambassador for Human Rights by the Arab Council for Human Rights.

He previously served as President of the African Union Staff Association, a body dedicated to advocating for the welfare and rights of AU staff members. With over 25 years of dedicated service in international development and human rights, Amb. Hammad has contributed significantly to global and African progress. His work has included refugee and resettlement issues through Migration and Refugee Services in Washington, D.C., and development roles with various international and continental organizations.

Since joining the Human Rights Division of the African Union Commission six years ago, he has remained deeply committed to the promotion and protection of human and peoples’ rights across Africa. Although he once aspired to become a medical doctor, driven by a desire to help heal the world, Amb. Hammad now channels that same passion into advancing justice, equality, and governance across the continent.

His unwavering commitment to institutional support and good governance reflects his broader vision: to see Africa rise as a strong and respected global powerhouse.
